Short answer. Use OpenAI when you want one vendor for language and speech, or need instruction-steered delivery from gpt-4o-mini-tts. Use Speakvora when you only need speech, want a lower per-character and per-minute rate, and benefit from ready-made prompts.
The price, read carefully
OpenAI's character-billed models are tts-1 at $15 and tts-1-hd at $30 per million characters. Speakvora's catalog voices are $0.70, about 95% and 98% lower at list price. OpenAI's gpt-4o-mini-tts is billed in tokens ($0.60 per million text-input tokens and $12 per million audio-output tokens), and we do not convert tokens to characters because audio output tokens depend on the length of speech generated.
For transcription, Whisper is $0.006 per minute and gpt-4o-transcribe is shown at about $0.006 per minute (an estimate on the page, billed in tokens). Speakvora's $0.0015 per minute is 75% lower than Whisper's rate. Accuracy differs by language and audio; test on your own recordings.
The OpenAI documentation page we read for speech does not state a maximum input length, so we do not compare request limits. Speakvora's is 500 characters per request.
