Cost and setup time, compared
What a pay-once agent costs against monthly plans, how long each takes to set up, and who it suits.

Short version
If you only need a few calls answered a month, a hosted monthly service is simpler and may be cheaper, and we will say so. If calls and texts keep coming, paying once starts winning after the first few months and the gap grows every year. That is the whole argument. The rest of this page is the arithmetic and the catches.
First year, by how busy you are
Speakvora columns include the bundle price, a Twilio local number, inbound call minutes at Twilio's list price and speech to text at $0.0015 a minute. Texts are extra on every side. The per-minute column is the platform fee alone, from $0.05 a minute, up to $0.40 a minute, which is the high end that guides report once language model, voice and phone costs are added to a platform like Vapi.
| Calls per month | Speakvora $214 bundle | Speakvora $399 bundle | Goodcall (reported $79 a month) | My AI Front Desk (reported $99 a month) | Per-minute platform, per year ($0.05 fee alone to $0.40 all-in) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light about 40 calls of 2.5 minutes | $240 | $425 | $948 | $1,188 | $60 to $480 |
| Medium about 200 calls of 3 minutes | $300 | $485 | $948 | $1,188 | $360 to $2,880 |
| Busy about 650 calls of 3 minutes | $468 | $653 | $948 | $1,188 | $1,200 to $9,600 |
Three years
| Calls per month | Speakvora $214 bundle | Same, with the optional $99 a year renewal from year two | Goodcall | My AI Front Desk | Per-minute platform |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light | $291 | $489 | $2,844 | $3,564 | $180 to $1,440 |
| Medium | $471 | $669 | $2,844 | $3,564 | $1,080 to $8,640 |
| Busy | $975 | $1,173 | $2,844 | $3,564 | $3,600 to $28,800 |
The monthly plans have call, customer or minute limits that vary, and overage is extra, so a busy business pays more than the headline price. We did not add that in, which favours them. At the very lightest use some services cost nothing: the Smith.ai AI plan reportedly includes about 25 calls a month free, which beats us if that is all you need. Above that, its reported AI plans run about $95 to $150 a month, and human plans from about $250 to $290 (Ruby Receptionists from about $250).
Setup time
| Option | Time to first working test | Where that comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Speakvora | About 5 minutes, then about 15 to connect a first service. Texting needs carrier approval, which can take days. | Our own start guide |
| Goodcall | Minutes to about an hour | Third-party reviews; no official figure found |
| My AI Front Desk | About 5 to 30 minutes for a basic setup | Vendor pages. Porting an existing number is reported at 7 to 21 business days |
| Smith.ai | Advertised as minutes; reviewers say same day, with its team reviewing your instructions first | Vendor page and reviews |
| Vapi, Retell | Tutorials claim 15 minutes to 2 hours for a first agent; one review says 2 to 4 weeks to real calls | Tutorials and one third-party review; they disagree |
Every competitor figure here is the vendor's own claim or a third-party estimate. Treat all of them as rough.
Who it makes sense for
- Restaurants, salons, repair and service shops that get the same questions every day: hours, prices, bookings, "where is my order".
- Owners who dislike monthly bills and are comfortable with an afternoon of setup.
- People who want their data on their own computer, not in a vendor's cloud.
- Developers and agencies who want to set it up for several locations. Extra locations are the bundle price again.
Who it does not make sense for
- You want a hosted service with nothing running on your computer. The agent runs on your own computer, and it must be on to answer.
- You need a live human to answer calls. Use a human service.
- You need outbound call campaigns at volume.
- You need compliance paperwork such as HIPAA. We make no such claim.

Questions
How much cheaper is Speakvora than a monthly AI receptionist?
At the reported entry prices of $79 and $99 a month, a year costs $948 to $1,188. The $214 bundle plus the phone line costs about $240 to $300 for the first year depending on how many minutes you use, and about $291 to $471 over three years. The gap widens each year, because you pay nothing monthly to us. It depends on your call volume, and hosted plans bundle things we bill separately.
Who does Speakvora make sense for?
A small business with its own computer that stays on, a steady flow of calls and texts, and an owner or staff member willing to spend an afternoon on setup. It also suits people who want to keep their data local and not pay by the month for ever.
Who should not choose it?
Anyone who wants a hosted service with nothing running on their own computer, who needs live human receptionists, who places outbound call campaigns, or who needs a compliance paper trail such as HIPAA. We make no HIPAA claim.
How long does it take to set up?
About 5 minutes from download to your first test, a few more if Python needs installing, then about 15 minutes to connect a first service such as Slack, Teams or an Android phone. Texting through a US Twilio number also needs carrier approval, which can take days. Hosted competitors advertise minutes to about an hour for a basic setup, but those are vendor claims.
What does the phone line cost on top of Speakvora?
You pay Twilio, or whichever phone provider you use, directly. Twilio's US price list shows $1.15 a month for a local number, $0.0085 a minute for inbound calls and $0.0083 per text segment, read October 28, 2026. An AI key, if you add one, is billed by your AI provider. Using the Speakvora API for new lines or speech to text is pay as you go: $3 per million characters to voice a new line (a 60-character line costs about two hundredths of a cent), and once you save it to your library it is stored on your computer and replays at no further charge. Speech to text is $0.0015 a minute.
