Deepgram alternative: cheaper transcription and ready-made prompt audio

People search for a Deepgram alternative for two reasons: the speech-to-text bill, or a text-to-speech bill for lines that never change. Speakvora answers both, with a clear limit on real-time voice agents.

Who switches

  • You transcribe recordings (calls, voicemails, meetings) in bulk and want a lower per-minute rate
  • You use Aura voices for fixed prompts and are paying to regenerate the same sentences
  • You want a cheaper second vendor for non-realtime speech while keeping Deepgram for streaming

What you gain

  • $0.0015 per minute of transcription at list price, against Nova-3's $0.0043 promotional or $0.0077 regular
  • $0.70 per million characters of text to speech against $15 to $30
  • A checked English phrase library for repeated prompts, with new packs coming
  • No promotion-dependent pricing

What you give up

  • A real-time Voice Agent API; Speakvora agents are turn-based beta
  • A 2,000-character text request (Speakvora's limit is 500)
  • No word timestamps or speaker labels yet
  • A $200 starting credit (Speakvora starts with 100,000 characters, 60 minutes, 200 turns)

The code change

Request shapes were taken from each provider's own documentation on 2026-10-08. Provider APIs change; check theirs before you migrate.

Deepgram text to speech (docs: developers.deepgram.com/docs/text-to-speech)

curl --request POST \
  --header "Content-Type: application/json" \
  --header "Authorization: Token $DEEPGRAM_API_KEY" \
  --output prompt.mp3 \
  --data '{"text":"Hello, how can I help you today?"}' \
  "https://api.deepgram.com/v1/speak?model=aura-2-thalia-en"
# response body is the audio bytes; limit 2,000 characters per request

Speakvora text to speech

curl -X POST https://speakvora.com/api/v1/speak \
  -H "x-api-key: $SPEAKVORA_KEY" -H "content-type: application/json" \
  -d '{"text":"Hello, how can I help you today?","voice":"af_heart","lang":"en"}'
# JSON reply: {"url":"https://speakvora.com/...m4a","lang":"en","voice":"af_heart","characters":32,"format":"m4a"}
curl -s "$URL" --output prompt.m4a # second step: download (or play) the link

What changes in practice: Deepgram returns streamed audio bytes and caps a text request at 2,000 characters, so a long script becomes four or more Speakvora calls (500-character limit). Authentication changes from an `Authorization: Token` header to an `x-api-key` header. The text limit is 500 characters per request, and Speakvora returns JSON with a url that you fetch or play. Library links are stable public files; custom-voice links last about five minutes.

We did not reproduce Deepgram's /v1/listen call here because we did not verify its current request shape; see Deepgram's docs. Speakvora's transcription call is a JSON body with base64 audio, format and optional language.

A safe migration order

  1. Create a Speakvora key in the portal.
  2. Move prompt audio first: swap the Aura call for /v1/speak and fetch the returned URL.
  3. Move non-realtime transcription next: send base64 audio to /v1/listen and compare text against your Deepgram output on 100 real recordings before cutting over.
  4. Keep Deepgram for any live streaming path until you have tested Speakvora's WebSocket on your traffic.

Is it actually cheaper?

Deepgram bills text to speech per 1,000 characters (Aura-1 $0.0150, Aura-2 $0.030 on Pay As You Go; Growth plan $0.0135 and $0.027) and speech to text per minute. Speakvora bills catalog voices at $0.70 per 1,000,000 characters, which is $0.0007 per 1,000. That is a list-price gap of about 95% against Aura-1 and 98% against Aura-2.

Test these before you commit

  • Run 100 of your real recordings through both transcribers and diff the text; we publish no accuracy benchmark.
  • If you stream audio live, test Speakvora's WebSocket with your own network and microphones before moving that path.
  • Confirm you do not rely on word timestamps or speaker labels, which Speakvora does not offer yet.
  • Recheck Deepgram's promotional Nova-3 prices on the day you decide; the comparison moves if the promotion ends.
